Larry Gordon Holbrook

December 1, 1936 ~ October 7, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Larry Gordon Holbrook, 80, of Moscow, passed away unexpectedly from an apparent heart attack on Saturday October 7, 2017 while gathering firewood with his son Scott near Orofino, Idaho.

Larry was born on December 1, 1936.  He was born at home on the family Ranch on Union Flat near Pullman, WA to Gordon O’dell Holbrook and Edna Mae (Larson) Holbrook.

Larry grew up all over the Pacific Northwest as his father was able to find work in various towns including Bremerton, Moses lake, Colfax, Moscow and Othello. As a young child he helped his family by maintaining a newspaper route.  He later worked and apprenticed his father as a carpenter. He graduated from Moses Lake High School with the class of 1955.

After high school, Larry worked for Boeing in Seattle.  He met and Married Judith Lee (Hayden) Nock in 1959 and this is where his first child was born.  Wanting to be closer to his family, Larry purchased a house and moved his family to Palouse in 1960, it was where they made a life and had 4 more children.  Larry kept busy re-roofing barns on the side while working for the local Carpenters Union. Larry and Judy were later divorced but remained friends.

In 1981 Larry married Shirley Krasselt in Moscow, Idaho.  As Larry’s heart was big, he welcomed Shirley’s 6 children as his own.  Larry kept very busy over the years working for Edwards Mill in St Maries, Bennett Lumber, and private hire to countless individuals whom either have a new house, a remodel or an addition hand crafted by Larry.  Larry and Shirley made their home on Moscow Mountain.

Larry never really retired, and at 80 years old, he was still pouring concrete, doing roofing jobs and building houses for those he loved and cared for.  He always had a job or two going on at all times, but you could often find him at a yard or estate sale. He had the biggest smile and you could always count on him for a story or a good joke. If you needed some odd tool, he would take you for a walk on his property and eventually – find it. Larry proudly passed his carpentry knowledge on to all his children.

Larry is survived by his children and step children, Terri Holbrook of Alaska; Don (Debbie) Holbrook of Palouse; Scott (Sheri) Holbrook of Palouse; Cynthia (John) Arland of Farmington;  Steven (Lenae) Holbrook of Palouse; Teresa Reilly (Chris Colebank) of California; Daniel Luman of Moscow, Melissa (Jon) Painter of Lewiston; Krysta Ficca of Spokane Valley and Joe (Norma) Holbrook of California; siblings Kirby (Elva) Holbrook of Spirit Lake; Rosanne (Bill) Manley of Arizona; and Robert “Butch” (Julie) Holbrook of Corbett, Oregon as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Judith, his second wife Shirley, his parents, step-son Chad and his Brother Gary.

Family and friends will be joining together for a Potluck Celebration of Larry’s life at the Palouse Community Center, October 21, 2017 from 11-3 PM. Larry will be laid to rest at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse, Washington together with his wife Shirley at a later date.
