Ena Adeline Leitz was born December 4, 1928, to Rudolph and Laura Batke in Sawyer, North
Dakota. Her mother passed away from pneumonia when Ena was just nine months old. Since
her father was unable to keep the farm running and take care of an infant Ena’s aunt and uncle
raised her. Upon graduating eighth grade Ena moved to Minot, North Dakota in order to
complete her education. In order to pay for her room and board she babysat, cooked, cleaned,
and canned food. She graduated from high school in 1947. That fall she made a trip to
Fairfield, Washington, to attend her cousin’s wedding. There was a job opening at the local drug
store and she decided to stay. She attended the youth group at the Lutheran church where she
met her husband Reinhold. The couple had a farm in Latah where they raised their two
children. Ena worked as a nurse’s aide at the local nursing home for over twenty years.
Crafting, sewing, crocheting and knitting were among many of her hobbies. Many premature
babies enjoyed the tiny hats she made for them. Once their children were raised, Ena and her
husband loved to travel and saw all but three of the states.
Ena is survived by her son David (Linda), grandchildren Anna (Gabe), Daniel, Kate, and John, and
one great grandson, Sam. Ena is preceded in death by her husband Reinhold and daughters
Dianne and Katherine.
