Shirley Normington, Potlatch, Idaho, passed away January 14, 2024 at Pullman Regional
Hospital. She was 86 years old. She was born April 16, 1937 in Moscow, Idaho to Roscoe (Red)
and Flora Tinnel.
She married Dewey Normington in 1952 at Moscow, Idaho. They had 6 children, Vicki (Dave)
Ruddick of Pullman, Rick (Tim Morse) of Clackamas, Oregon, Laurie Weinmann of Lewiston, Bob
of Potlatch, Kathy (Wayne) Cramer of Lewiston and Steve (Cindy) of Potlatch. She is survived by
grandsons Andy Ruddick of Pullman and Weston Normington of Battle Creek, Michigan.
Shirley worked at both the University of Idaho and Washington State University as a cook. She
taught many students her home cooking ways. She stayed in touch with many of them after she
retired.
She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, past oracle of Royal Neighbors, and
past president of the Potlatch Senior Citizens. She loved being around people. She was very
involved in her kids’ activities when possible. She was a very busy woman. She couldn’t do just
one job; she had at least two going at one time. She loved to tell stories of the past. She could
recall all the neighbors that had lived on Fiddlers Ridge where she lived most of her life. She
had fond memories of Riverside in Potlatch. She would sneak out of the house and go dancing
at Riverside. She even tried to race a car on their race track.
Shirley loved to fish and camp and enjoyed many fun family reunions with the Normington
aunts, uncles and cousins. She always had a garden and lots of house plants. She even had fake
plants in the house which her son Bob always teased her about. She would successfully grow
cherry tomato plants at LaDow Court and at Regency.
Shirley will be deeply missed. She made friends wherever she went. A special thank you to the
staff at LaDow Court in Garfield where she lived for a year. She then moved to Regency
Pullman over a year ago and told her doctor she now had too many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey, her parents, one sister Joyce Smith,
brothers Johnny, Dale, Robert and Jerry. She was always called their baby sister. She lost two
grandsons, Brian McGinty and T.J. Weinmann.
A graveside memorial will be held on March 23, 2024, 11:00 A.M. at the Freeze Cemetery with Rev. Lee Nicholson officiating.
A luncheon will follow at the Potlatch senior Center following the service.
Contributions can be made to the Potlatch Ambulance Service.
